Creating Sustainable and Value-Driven Events for Members

November 20, 2024

with Marsha Flanagan, MEd, CEM

The message from our guest this week on the 6 Degrees of Associations Podcast is abundantly clear: associations need to step it up when it comes to events, be unafraid to take risks, and  be willing to make mistakes because the “same old thing” will no longer suffice. We are honored to be joined by Marsha Flanagan, MEd, CEM, the President and CEO of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE), for this lively discussion, as her expertise, experience, and wisdom shine throughout. With over a decade of experience at IAEE and a strong commitment to servant leadership, she emphasizes the importance of understanding member needs and promoting value in every event in this interview.

Throughout our conversation, Marsha stressed that the future of association events lies in experiential engagement and personalized experiences, noting how technology can enhance interactions rather than replace face-to-face connections. “Data-driven decisions are crucial for understanding attendee and exhibitor behaviors,” she said, explaining how insights obtained from data can lead to significant improvements in event planning and execution. Sustainability and inclusivity were also prominent themes throughout our discussion. Marsha believes that associations should actively pursue sustainable practices and create welcoming environments for all members. “As we move forward, we need to ensure that our events are not only memorable but also responsible and inclusive,” she stated.
